  • Police Monitor Bellevue Mall Protest; No Arrests

    die-inPolice kept a close eye on about 30 people who staged a protest inside the Bellevue Square Mall during a busy holiday shopping time Saturday, but made no arrests. The group protested the recent killings of unarmed black men by police. They chanted and staged a "die-in" in the mall's center courtyard.

    sports3Victor Robbins scored a career-high 27 points as Oregon State dominated DePaul 90-59 on Thursday night. Olaf Schaftenaar added a career-high 21 points and Gary Payton II had 15 points and five steals for the Beavers (8-2). Jamee Crockett had 14 points for the Blue Demons (6-4). Schaftenaar scored 11 of the Beavers' first 13 points to give Oregon State a 13-6 lead at the 15:47 mark. A Robbins 3-pointer stretched the margin to 42-21 with 3:23 remaining in the half.

Smartphones, Recession Changed How Consumers Shop

b_250_0_16777215_00_images_obgrabber_2013-09_be05de1585.jpgiStockphoto/Thinkstock (NEW YORK) -- The five-year anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which sparked a financial panic and worsened the recession, is being marked by a speech Monday from President Obama. As the economy continues to reel from the impact, consumers have adapted and changed their shopping habits.

"What happened in 2008 is not only did we get the recession, we also got smartphones and we got social media," says consumer behavior expert Eric Holtzclaw of Laddering Works, a market strategy and marketing firm.

Holtzclaw notes that shoppers have not only become more cautious, many of them are also much better informed on price comparisons.

"We can have conversations with other people and find out whether or not a product or service works," he says.

But, Holtzclaw points out, many retailers have been slow to catch up with this seismic shift in shopping habits, ignoring consumers' use of mobile devices when they are in stores.

"They should have social media campaigns that really interact with their consumers," he advises.
