See a Movie, Get a Download?

b_250_0_16777215_00_images_obgrabber_2013-10_a0e3e9ed2f.jpgComstock Images (NEW YORK) -- Hollywood is looking to kill two birds with one stone by following a Canadian cinema company’s lead. When Pacific Rim opened last summer, Cineplex offered moviegoers a special deal on a $19.99 SuperTicket.  For that price, customers saw the movie and got a digital download of Pacific Rim too.

With home-video sales plummeting and streaming revenue rising, Hollywood sees the Cineplex video/ticket bundling system as a way to potentially revive the market for home video releases.

Paramount has already tried it with screenings of the Brad Pitt zombie flick World War Z, and with 40,000 screens in the U.S., other movie studios also see it as a golden opportunity even if the price initially scares off some people.

Theater chains might also like the idea since they’re cut out of traditional video revenue.
