(NEW YORK) -- Stocks finished Wednesday trading at fresh record highs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both ended with a record close. The Dow, gaining almost 71 points, closed at 15,821.63. The S&P closed up over 14 points at 1,782.00. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite closed 46 points higher at 3,965.58.
One of the main catalysts for Wednesday's surge was strong earnings from retail giant Macy’s. The strong sales figures are fueling hopes that the holiday shopping season may yield better returns than expected. Other retailers -- Bed, Bath & Beyond, JCPenney and Nordstrom -- also rose.
