The 67-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said that the baby is a boy and was named after her late husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith, who played guitar in the famed Detroit proto punk band The MC5.  In an interesting coincidence, Patti pointed out that the child was born on the 20th anniversary of Fred's death, and November 4 also was the birthday of her late friend and famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

Smith also told Friedman that she's at work on the follow-up to her award-winning 2010 memoir, Just Kids, which focuses on her relationship with Mapplethorpe.  In addition, an original song by Patti called "Mercy Is" is featured on the soundtrack to the new Russell Crowe film Noah.  Meanwhile, Smith and her band begin a new tour on April 2 in Casablanca, Morocco, that's followed by a series of European shows.
