-- Billy Joel surprised an elementary school in his native Long Island, New York, on Wednesday by accepting its invitation to attend a musical tribute to his career. Newsday reports Billy took a short motorcycle ride from his Centre Island home to Deasy Elementary School in Glen Cove, where kindergartners, first graders and second graders performed 15 of his songs.
The school's principal, Nomi Rosen, tells the newspaper, "I asked him if he wanted to sit in front, but he said he would rather stay in the back so he wouldn't make the kids nervous."
The concert's director, Rosita Mallo, said Joel's presence was a "welcomed surprise." She said, "I found out two minutes before the concert started that he was here and it totally freaked me out. My nerves went sky high."
Billy left the show early because he was receiving a lot of requests for photos and autographs. Presumably, he felt he was becoming a distraction.
