-- Pete Townshend's new song "It Must Be Done," which the Who legend helped write specifically for FX's The Americans, will get its world premiere during this Wednesday's episode of the Cold War espionage series. Fans, however, can preview the track now by watching a new trailer for the show. You can see the 30-second clip online now at FX Networks' official YouTube channel.
As heard in the ad, the song is an atmospheric, reggae-flavored tune that features Townshend singing the lyric, "In the snowfall, in the rainstorm/As the gods call, there's a newborn/Everything's fine, in the sunshine/But it must be done…I can't find my way."
Townshend co-wrote "It Must Be Done" with The Americans' soundtrack composer, Nathan Barr, marking the first time the 68-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has written a song expressly for a television show.
The Americans focuses on a pair of undercover Soviet spies posing as a married couple in the U.S. during the early 1980s. Townshend recently discussed writing "It Must Be Done" with Billboard, explaining, "I wanted to keep it very simple. Here's this couple whose whole life is about duty, duty without honor, duty without explanation. There are no accolades. They're not living a lie but doing things they find hard to do."
The next episode of The Americans is titled "Yousaf," and will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT. According to Billboard, Townshend's song will be heard during a scene involving "sex and murder."
