-- Aerosmith's new concert video, Rock for the Rising Sun, hit stores Tuesday on DVD and Blu-ray and as a digital download. The release was shot during Aerosmith's fall 2011 tour of Japan, which took place a little over a half-year after the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the country and caused the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plant.
Recalling the circumstances surrounding the trek, guitarist Joe Perry tells ABC News Radio, "It was about eight months after the disaster, and a lot of bands weren't going over there then, 'cause they were afraid of the radiation…We had the tour booked and we were gonna go. And we felt like our Japanese fans needed a lift."
Aerosmith's Japanese fans have always been particularly passionate about the group, but Perry maintains that because of the timing of the visit, "there was an extra level of energy around the shows."
He adds that the full impact of how much Aerosmith's Japanese devotees appreciated that the group ignored the potential dangers to come play in the country "didn't hit us until we were there doing the shows, and then we really realized how thankful the fans were."
Rock for the Rising Sun boasts performances of 18 songs, including classic tunes like "Love in an Elevator," "Livin' on the Edge," "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way," as well as quite a few lesser-known numbers. However, Perry notes that "it's not just a performance video, it's a documentary about how the fans reacted to us coming to Japan."
Director Casey Patrick Tebo, Aerosmith's official videographer, captured a bevy of candid moments of the band members off the stage -- interacting with their faithful followers, clowning with each other and seeing the sights -- and incorporated them into the film. Tebo also interviewed the group and its fans about their mutual love and respect.
Aerosmith now is set to return to Japan for the first time since 2011. Their concerts in the country will take place on August 8 in Tokyo, August 11 in Nagoya and August 14 and 16 in Osaka. Check out all of the band's forthcoming dates at AeroForceOne.com.
