Task Force to Study More Nuclear Power

The bipartisan Senate Energy Committee has unanimously approved a bill that would create a task force that will study whether the state should add more nuclear power. The four Republicans and three Democrats are considering ways to cut carbon emissions which have been linked to an increase in acid levels in the ocean that can kill baby shellfish.

Energy Northwest and Tri-Cities leaders are interested in the possible future construction of small modular reactors. While the Northwest Energy Coalition wants the bill to outline what the task force should study, including environmental effects, security issues, costs and energy consumption. This is the first carbon emissions proposal to make it into bill form.
