New restroom for Port Of Hoodsport. Building the restroom for the residents and visitors who use the Port dock has been a goal of the Port for many, many years. A survey in 2007 showed that residents considered a public restroom a number one priority.
The Port also has a goal of supporting business in the community. The restroom supports this goal because business locations in Hoodsport have limited ability to provide customers use of a restroom because of age, limited capacity and lack of a central septic system. The current commissioners narrowed down a list of restroom options to four alternatives. These alternatives were priced by Foster & Williams architects of Shelton. Evaluation factors included location, parking impact, initial cost and most importantly maintenance cost. The final selection was a prefabricated restroom built by CXT Corp. in Spokane, WA and a no-cost lease of IGA property owned by Mike and Geri Purvis. Because of time necessary to process the required permits, a large portable restroom was rented for the interim. This proved valuable in assessing acceptability and usage, which helped refine the septic sizing.
The septic design was provided by Jim Ayres, PE, owner of Ayres and Associates, a professional civil engineering company. The Port of Hoodsport issued a competitive solicitation for the building foundation preparation and septic system. The contract was awarded to Kelly’s Excavation & Trucking on October 2, 2012 for a fixed price of $73,700. The CXT restroom building cost $112,300 and was trucked in and hoisted into position on February 14, 2013. Grant Foster of Foster & Williams provided coordination services between the contractors and Mason County.
The Port thanks all the participants for a job well done. Mike and Geri Purvis for their unyielding support for the restroom, Jim Ayres for his septic design expertise, Grant Foster for his construction and building requirements expertise, Kelly Thompson as a contractor with an easy going nature, who gets the job done, on time , and on budget. The Port also thanks the following Mason County employees for their efforts on this project: Amanda Reynolds, environmental health specialist (septic design), Rebecca Hersha, Planner, and Grace Miller, Planner
