A new Clean Energy Institute at the University of Washington is researching renewable energy ideas. They include low-cost materials for solar cells, industrial-scale batteries and smart-grid technology. The Seattle Times reports Washington Gov. Jay Inslee "flipped the switch" Thursday at the institute, promising that clean energy will create money and jobs and that Washington is in an excellent position to benefit from the innovations.
The institute was created with $6 million from the Legislature. It ties together federally funded research at the university, much of which is conducted in partnership with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.
