Wyla E. Barney


barneyw.jpgWyla Ellen Munuluk Barney, 86, of Christmas Village in Shelton, WA died peacefully at home on Monday, July 25, 2011. Wyla was born on June 30, 1925 to Walter and Beulah (King) Nichols in Kotzebue, AK. It was there that she inherited the middle name “Munuluk” from the native Alaskans.

Her family moved from Alaska to Idaho when Wyla was three. She graduated high school in Leavenworth, WA and attended college at the Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, ID and then obtained her Bachelors Degree from the University of British Columbia. Wyla married Willis Barney in June of 1945. Mrs. Barney taught school in Canada from 1968 until 1969, but was mainly a homemaker and wife of a Pastor, raising three children. Wyla was a member of the Nazarene Church and strong in her faith.

Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, rockhounding, sewing and music. She played the organ and the vibraharp. Wyla was an avid reader and especially enjoyed science fiction and was a huge Star Trek fan.

Survivors include her husband, Willis, of Shelton; daughters, Wyla (Charles) Wood, Shelton and Francie (Jim) Sylvester of Monroe; son, Al Barney (Lee Lafleche), Olympia; brother, Will Nichols, Caldwell, ID; sister, Dorine Nichols, Nampa, ID, seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Wyla was preceded in death by Her parents, brother Lauren Nichols and an infant grandchild.
Memorial donations can be made to the Church of the Nazarene, 1331 Shelton Springs Rd. Shelton, WA or the Voice of the Martyrs, P.O. Box 443, Bartlesville, OK 74005-0443. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, Shelton on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 2:00 pm.
