Delbert P. Hartwell Sr.

hartwelld.jpgDelbert Peter Hartwell Sr., 88, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Fir Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center. Delbert was born on December 5, 1923 to Frank and Margery (Butrick) Hartwell in Darrington, WA. Mr. Hartwell attended Lincoln High School in Seattle and enlisted in the Army Air Corp in April of 1943 and served in Italy during WWII. He was shot down over Austria and was a prisoner of war for 6 months upon return was awarded the Purple Heart. He met his wife, Jean Van Dal, when she was 11 years old and they married when she was 16. They  have been married 66 years. In 1958, he started out as a distributor for the Seattle PI in Seattle. In 1955, he transferred from Seattle to Shelton continuing to work for the Seattle PI; in 1965 he started employment with the Shelton Post Office and officially retired in 1984.

Mr. Hartwell was a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, the POW’s, Moose and Elks. His hobbies included golf, fishing, and bowling. He enjoyed solitaire on his computer and loved reading western novels, especially Louis L’Amour. He and his wife were “snowbirds” for many years and traveled to Yuma, Arizona. Delbert enjoyed playing slots at the casino, peanut butter sandwiches and spending time with his kids and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, Shelton; sons, Delbert (Juanita) Hartwell Jr, Shelton, Terry (Mary) Hartwell, Chehalis, Donald and Daniel (Teresa) Hartwell, both of Shelton; sister, Joy (David) Amos of Pt. Ludlow, WA; nine grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and daughter in law Pam. A service will be held at a later date. The family was served by McComb Funeral Home.
