Ernest “Ernie” Thomas Wanzer, 85, passed away at his home at Lakeland Village in Allyn, WA on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Ernie was born on February 20, 1928 to Marion F. and Gertrude R. (Bockwaldt) Wanzer in Bellingham, WA. He graduated from Western Washington University with a Master’s Degree in Education and served in the United States Army in occupation services in Japan after WWII. Ernest taught grades 4th, Junior High and High School in the Highline School District beginning in 1951. He also taught at Highline Community College. He was an educator for 30 years. Mr. Wanzer was an extremely talented artist and teaching young people meant a great deal to him and was a favorite and beloved teacher of many as was shown by the many messages sent to him over the last few days. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. His hobbies included art work and he was very creative in several different mediums. He enjoyed his family, traveling, golf and gardening. Ernie is survived by his wife, Betty, of Allyn, WA; sons, Richard (Jan), Gregory (Rita) and Paul (M.E.); grandchildren, Rachel, Kurt, Kerri, Bryan, Micaela,and Riley; step grandchildren, Chelsea Horrigan, Kyla Blair, Katie and Eli DeWitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, son and daughter in law, Gary and Carol and sister Barbara Keck. Donations can be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, J5-200, P.O. Box 19024, Seattle, WA. Memorial services will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church, 1212 Connection St. in Shelton at 2:00 pm. The family was served by McComb Funeral Home.
