Burkman_Susan.jpgSusan Burkman, 58, of Kulm, ND, died Thursday, April 18, 2013 in Fargo, ND.

Susan (Miller) Burkman was born Baby Sebastiani, in Portland, Oregon on December 12, 1954.  She was adopted by the late Ed and Rose Miller.  She grew up in Vernonia, OR on the ocean and loved being around the water.  She could be found working on her father s fishing vessel and helping out on the boats in Astoria, OR.  She loved helping him at his Cedarwood Timber Company in Vernonia, OR.  She attended Vernonia High School and graduated with and Associates degree from Lane Community College in Eugene, OR.  She was a police officer on the Shelton Police Force and the Mason County Sheriff s department for several years.  She got into an accident and rolled several times, leaving her a paraplegic.  Proving doctors wrong with her resilience she walked again, but was plagued with chronic pain and spinal cord problems.  Throughout the recent years she has had 7 spinal cord surgeries and had her 8th on Tuesday the 16th, surgery went well and shortly after her vitals dropped.  She passed away peacefully in her sleep.  She and Arlan were both PATH Foster Parents throughout the years.  She diligently worked with the Red Cross and Lutheran Social Services with disasters and blood draws.  She enjoyed working with flowers and owned her own floral business in Boise, ID.  She is known for giving her big hugs and smiles to everyone.  She loved cooking, enjoyed singing and music, arts and crafts with the grandkids and putting others first. 

She is survived by her husband, Arlan Burkman, four children Jennifer Burton, Burlington, VT; Holly Burkman (Preston Sitzmann), Edgeley, ND; Katie Burkman, Wahpeton, ND; Adam Burkman, Aberdeen, SD; three grandchildren, Madison and Merissa and one on the way.

Funeral   10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley.

Visitation   One hour before the service at the church.

Interment   Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND, at a later date.
