Russell Ellsworth Mayhew

Russell Ellsworth Mayhew, 90, died Thursday, February 16, 2012 in Shelton, WA. He was born June 6, 1921 to Edward Arthur and Elsie Blanch (Nodding) Mayhew in Boston, MA. Russell graduated from Compton High School and attended Compton Junior College in Compton, CA.
He served in the US Navy during WWII and married Elaine Sofalko on September 15, 1953 in Long Beach, CA. Russell was an electrical engineer for 20 years with North American Aviation in Downey and Long Beach, CA. He enjoyed rock collecting, fishing and traveling the USA and Canada.
Russell is survived by his wife, Elaine Mayhew of Shelton, WA; son, Robert A. Mayhew (Judy Ann) of Ocean Shores, WA; two granddaughters, Krystal Ann Mayhew of Beaverton, OR and Amelia Marie Mayhew of Ocean Shores, WA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elsie Mayhew; brother, Kenneth Mayhew; and sister, Ruth C. Goodman.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 1:00pm at Fern Hill Cemetery in Aberdeen, WA. The family was served by McComb Funeral Home, Shelton, WA.

Glenn Marion Griggs

Griggsglenn.jpgGlenn Marion Griggs, 89, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Mason General Hospital in Shelton, WA.  He was born on July 1, 1922 to George and Edna B. (Bucher) Griggs in Shelton, WA.  He married Lena Greiner in Ashford, WA. 
Glenn served in the US Navy during WWII as a Ship Repair in the South Pacific.  He had worked as a logger, welder and had been employed as a heavy equipment operator.  Glenn built and operated one of the largest draglines in the world at the time.  He enjoyed horses, trail riding and mechanic work.  He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Mt. Tahoma in Ashford, WA and was a charter member of Back Country Horseman in Mason County. 
Glen was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lena Griggs in 1986; and two sisters, Georgie and Nancy. 
He is survived by his significant other, Mary Richards of Shelton, WA; sons, Steve Griggs of Birchrun, MI, John Griggs of Lubbock, TX, George Griggs of Jacksonville, FL; daughters, Debi Griggs Radke of Issaquah, WA, Barbara Griggs Elliott, Grapeview, WA; twin brothers, Bernard Griggs of Olympia, WA and Morris Griggs of Buckeye, AZ; ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 
Memorial donations can be sent to Habitat for Humanity, 216 W. Cota, Street, Shelton, WA. 
A memorial service will be held at Hope Chapel, 421, West “E” St., Shelton, WA on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 11:00 am.  McComb Funeral Home is privileged to serve the family.



Don R. Kantas

kantasd.jpgDon Raymon Kantas, 70, died on Monday, January 30, 2012 at his home in Shelton, WA.

Don was born on April 20, 1941 to Harry and Angeline (Mainates) Kantas in Portland, OR. He graduated from Park Rose High School in Portland, Or in 1960, attended Oregon Polytech and received his Associates of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1960, he served in the United States Coast Guard Reserves, being honorably discharged in 1968.

He married Joan Fursman in 1965 and divorced. He was later married to Colleen McGee in 1997 and divorced in 2008. Don worked in the sawmill industry for over 30 years as a mill superintendent and plant manager. He was best known for breaking production records and his unconventional or “old school” management style. Previous employers include Louisiana Pacific Corp, Wisconsin, Little Skookum Lumber Co, Shelton, Mary’s River Lumber Co, Montesano, Bambee Mill Inc, Renton, Treesource Co, Spanaway and Tumwater Lumber.

Mr. Kantas was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church and the Elks. He was a hard working man who enjoyed sports and helped coach Little League.

He is survived by his daughter, Mia Kantas, Shelton; sons, Tony Kantas (Sonja Cady), Olympia and Steve Kantas, Shelton; sisters, Marsha Beckman (Marv), Portland, OR and Christine Kantas, Medford, OR; brothers, Andrew Kantas, Paris Kantas (Cecil) and Mark Kantas, all of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Alex, Gabbie and Noah Kantas and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Shelton on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at noon with a reception to follow. The family was served by McComb Funeral Home.
