The Dow Jones Industrial Average added just 1.81 points to close at 15,545.55.  Fast food chain McDonald's (-2.68 percent) was a drag on the blue chips index after its second-quarter profit report fell below Wall Street expectations.

The Nasdaq Composite rose 12.78 points to 3,600.39, while the S&P 500 gained 3.44 points to finish the session at 1,695.53.

The National Association of Realtors reported existing home sales for June dropped by 1.2 percent after a sharp increase in May. Sales were originally expected to rise 1.9 percent. Still, the figures remain at a 3.5-year high.
