Top Pediatrician’s Group Assures Most Drugs Safe When Breastfeeding
(NEW YORK) -- Breastfeeding mothers are always concerned about how the medicines they take may affect their babies. Now, the American Academy of Pediatrics has issued an official statement noting that most medicines are safe for breastfeeding mothers. After reviewing past research on medications, supplements and other drugs, researchers found that only a low amount of most medicines actually end up in breast milk.
Perhaps more importantly, the academy is reminding mothers that it is usually safe for them to be vaccinated while breastfeeding. Of course, moms should tell their doctors about any medicines they are taking, including herbals, and doctors should be up to date on the latest guidelines for what’s safe.
Moms can also go online and check trusted sources, like the National Institutes of Health, to make sure their medicines are safe for their babies.
