Texas Bans Minors from Tanning Beds
(AUSTIN, Texas) -- A new law in Texas bans anyone under the age of 18 from using tanning beds. The law takes effect Sunday. The law will also require businesses to keep records of customers' first three visits, including their skin type, the length of the tanning sessions, and any illnesses resulting from the sessions, the Texas Tribune reports.
In 2009, the World Health Organization classified tanning beds as having a direct link to cancer.
Medical professionals say there is significant evidence that tanning bed use increases the risk of melanoma, a skin cancer that develops when skin cells are damaged by ultraviolet radiation.
While melanoma is treatable in early stages, it can be deadly.
According to the Texas Tribune, officials say using tanning beds before the age of 18 increases the risk for melanoma by 85 percent.
