Wednesday, July 9, 2014 around 2:30pm Central Mason Fire & EMS was toned for a large brush fire off Highway 3 across from the Deer Creek Store. Upon arrival crews found a 2-3 acre grass fire in the hay field. Crews had difficulty gaining access to the fire. The winds were blowing the fire toward the north and creating heavy smoke and low visibility on Highway 3. It took about 2 hours for crews to fully extinguish the fire.
There was a 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck that was completely destroyed by the fire. The pickup was being used to comb the grass for bailing. The origin of the fire in still under investigation.
Responding agencies were Mason County Fire Districts 2,3,4,11,12,13,18, three DNR units, WSP, and MCSO.
