Coast Guard Approves Lower Columbia River Bridge

i5columbiabridgeThe U.S. Coast Guard has approved a new bridge carrying Interstate 5 over the Columbia River.  The Oregon Department of Transportation announced the decision on Friday.  At 116 feet, the proposed replacement bridge would be lower than the existing span, which lifts to accommodate taller river traffic. Its future was cast into doubt when Washington's Legislature refused to put up money for it.

The Coast Guard approval gives a boost to Oregon interests who want the state to build the bridge without money from Washington.  The states have agreed to pay nearly $90 million to three upriver businesses that may not be able to get some of their products under the lower span.
