The Kentucky Republican is a board-certified ophthalmologist, and while on recess this August, the specialist in corneal disease and glaucoma keeps his skills sharp by performing eye surgeries.

Due to Senate rules, Paul can't maintain a for-profit medical practice so he does the work pro bono, his staffer Moira Bagley told Politico.

Bagley says, "Most of these surgeries are for cataracts, and these are people that don’t have insurance, that are low-income cases."  She contends it's the senator's way to "give back to the state."

Paul told a Rotary Club in Paducah Wednesday that he was conducting cataract surgeries on four patients that very afternoon.
