DNR Permits Campfires East Of Cascade Crest

Local bans still apply in some northeast Washington areas.OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that campfire restrictions are eased. Recreational campfires will be permitted in established fire rings in designated campgrounds on DNR-protected lands statewide, including east of the Cascade Crest.

There are exceptions. Due to continued high fire danger, campfires may not be allowed in some locations in northeast Washington. Visitors must check at the campground entrance or with the campground host before starting a campfire.

In other areas, fire danger has been reduced by the recent rainfall and moderating temperatures.

Even though conditions have improved, there are still many weeks to go in this year’s wildfire season.

United Way recruits Reading Buddies for 2014-15

August 26, 2014 – Olympia, Wash. – Today, two-thirds of American fourth graders cannot read at grade level. And, disadvantaged children come to school at least two years behind their peers in pre-reading skills. It is hard to catch up – especially after second or third grade. Volunteers who work with students have the power to help boost academic achievement for a child and set the right track for a brighter future. United Way of Thurston County seeks passionate, dedicated and kind volunteers in Thurston, Lewis and Mason Counties to join the Reading Buddy program for the 2014-15 school year.According to Impact Forms conducted by United Way, reading level improvement results indicated a high percentage of reading advances made by students as adult buddies sparked a new excitement for reading.

“Although the success rate is evident, there is still a great need for more Reading Buddies in elementary schools throughout Thurston, Lewis and Mason Counties,” said Jeannie Roe Gruber, Retired and Senior Volunteer Director.

Consider serving as a United Way Reading Buddy to children ages five to 10 years old, in a one-on-one or group setting by dedicating one hour a week from October 2014 to May 2015.

Salmon Fishing Will Close At Hoodsport Hatchery Zone

Action: Closes salmon fishing in the Hoodsport Hatchery Zone, excluding the ADA-accessible fishing platform.  Effective Date:  Aug. 30, 2014, until further notice.Species affected:  Salmon.

Location:  Hoodsport Hatchery Zone waters within a 2,000-foot arc seaward of the yellow marker buoys at the mouth of Finch Creek.

Reason for action:  Chinook broodstock collection efforts at the Hoodsport Hatchery are well behind the goal (~2,000). As of Aug. 26, only 36 adult chinook broodstock have been trapped at the hatchery.  The closure of the salmon fishery contained within the Hoodsport Hatchery Zone will work in conjunction with a tribal fishery closure to fulfill broodstock collection requirements.  The salmon fishery may re-open if broodstock collection efforts indicate the goal will be met.

Other information:  The Hoodsport ADA-accessible fishing platform remains open to anglers with disabilities following the same regulations for the Hoodsport Hatchery Zone regulations found in the Washington Sport Fishing Rules pamphlet.  Other waters in Marine Area 12 remain unaffected by this rule change.
