Chilean President Michelle Bachelet gave the army authority over the evacuation of the port city of Valparaiso, declaring the city a disaster zone, BBC News reports. Much of the city is reportedly without power, BBC News says, and strong coastal winds continue to push the flames into the city, about 70 miles west of Santiago.

Officials estimate 500 or more homes have been destroyed in the blaze.
