(ROME) -- Costa Concordia Captain Francesco Schettino was entertaining a young lover on the ship’s bridge the night the cruise liner struck a reef off the coast of Tuscany almost two years ago, new revelations show. Schettino had originally claimed the Moldavian dancer, Domnica Cemortan, was his translator. But under oath, she admitted that she was having an affair with the married 53-year-old captain.
Cemortan also confessed that she was not on the official passenger list, nor in possession of a ticket, but was let on board by Schettino himself.
Schettino, who stands accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship, has tried to place the blame for the 2012 shipwreck that killed 32 people on his helmsman. But prosecutors say it was the young dancer’s presence on the boat that generated the “confusion” that contributed to the collision.
