Machado had been on the shelf since since suffering a knee injury back on Sept. 23. After surgery and a lengthy rehab, the team feels Machado is ready to play with the big league club.

During his rehab assignment, the 21-year-old Machado went 8-for-12 in three games with the Orioles minor league affiliates.

Despite his limited time in the majors, Machado is one of the most exciting young players in Major League Baseball not just because of his bat, but for his glove as well: in 156 games last season, Machado hit .283 with 14 home runs, 71 RBIs, scored 88 runs, and hit 51 doubles.

Filling in for Machado this season had been Ryan Flaherty and Jonathan Schoop. The two combined to hit .213 with just one home run.
