Texans Stun Chargers 31-28 on 'Monday Night Football'
(SAN DIEGO) -- Not only did the Houston Texans come to San Diego and defeat the San Diego Chargers 31-28 in their season opener, but they did so in stunning fashion. Mike McCoy's debut as the Chargers' head coach was going smoothy. His team jumped out to a 28-7 lead during the third quarter and it looked like the game was over.
But the Texans stormed back. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw two touchdowns, followed by an interception returned for a touchdown by Brian Cushing, and the game was tied at 28 in the fourth quarter.
Houston kicker Randy Bullock wound up kicking a 41-yard field goal as time expired to give the Texans the win.
"Once you put a score on the board, then another, and the defense gets a stop, the big turnover, it just builds," Schaub said."Momentum keeps building, and you can feel that energy, and it's contagious."
Schaub wound up passing for 346 yards with three touchdowns, while wide receiver Andre Johnson caught 12 passes for 146 yards.
For the Chargers, quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 195 yards and four touchdowns, but completed just one of the passes he attempted in the fourth quarter.
