The 60-year-old Ellerson went 20-41 in five seasons at the helm, including an 0-5 record against Navy. Army was blown out by the Midshipmen 34-7 on Saturday for its 12th straight loss in the series.

The Black Knights finished 3-9 this season, and Ellerson was far from satisfied with how his team performed this year.

"Obviously, in the body of work, we've made some progress," Ellerson said Saturday. "But I wasn't brought in to make progress. I was brought in to win some football games and beat Navy. I've lost to our rival five times."

Ellerson led Army to a win over SMU in the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl, its first bowl win since 1985.  They went 8-28 the following three seasons.
