MMK Girls Win First District Championship
The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team won its first District Championship Saturday beating Taholah in overtime 65 to 62 to take the Class 1B Southwest District 4 Trophy. The Owls and the Chitwhins battled the entire game. The first half saw Taholah up 8 points but the girls from Matlock fought back and pulled within 2 at half.
The foul bug bit the Owls in the second half while the Chitwhins had the turnover bug. In overtime, MMK’s Ashley Kiliz hit two 3-pointers to help hold off Taholah. Kiliz finished with 20 points. The Owls also got 17 points from Jaycee Valley, and 10 each from Miranda Sowle and Carlie Adsero. Lauren Dierkop added 6. And Melodie Snyder rounded out the scoring with 2. The Owls head into the regional round of the State Hardwood Classic as a number one seed. The Chitwhins were led in the loss by Trish Charley’s 21 points, 17 from Karleena Walther, and 10 from Leeza James. Taholah heads to regionals as the number 2 seed.
