Mariners Tie Padres 5-5
Brad Miller went 3-for-4 and fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle as the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres played to a 5-5 tie Tuesday evening in Cactus League play at Peoria Stadium. The Mariners are 14-5-3 in Cactus League play, with a little under two weeks remaining until the start of the regular season March 31 at Los Angeles Angels.
Miller, who started at second base for the first time this spring, hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning, singled in the 7th and doubled in the 8th inning. He is batting .412 (14x34) with 11 runs scored, 7 extra-base hits (2B – 1, 3B – 2, HR – 4) and 8 RBI in 12 Cactus League games.
Starting pitcher Randy Wolf tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks, to go with 3 strikeouts. Left-hander Charlie Furbush worked a perfect 5th inning with one strikeout.
The Mariners took the early lead on a Miller solo home run in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The solo blast was Miller’s team-leading 4th home run of the spring (tied for 2nd-most in the Cactus League).
San Diego took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the 6th inning. Jedd Gyorko drove in a run with a double down the left field line and the go-ahead run came into score on a passed ball.
After Seattle evened the score in the 7th inning on a Justin Smoak sacrifice fly, the Padres retook a 4-2 lead with a pair of runs (1 ER) off closer Fernando Rodney.
The Mariners took a 5-4 lead with a wild three-run 8th inning. Endy Chavez and Willie Bloomquist recorded two-out, RBI singles, and Bloomquist came around to score when he advance to second on the throw and scored on a throwing error by Padres catcher Austin Hedges.
San Diego tied the game with a run off Dominic Leone in the 9th inning to secure the Mariners third tie of the spring.
The Mariners (14-5-3) return to Cactus League action tomorrow with a home game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers (9-12) at Peoria Stadium (1:05 pm). RH Blake Beavan (2-0, 2.13) will make his fourth spring start (5th appearances) against Brewers RH Wily Peralta (0-1, 4.15). The game will be broadcast live on Mariners.com (free) and will air on a 710 ESPN Seattle at 8 pm. A special pre-game edition of the Cactus League Report will run from 7-8 pm.
