MESA, Ariz. – Led by 6.0 scoreless innings from starting pitcher Erasmo Ramirez, four pitchers combined to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Chicago Cubs Thursday afternoon in front of a Cactus League record crowd of 15,243 at Cubs Park.
The Mariners improved to 15-6-3 with the win, including going 10-1-2 on the road. The Mariners and Cleveland Indians (off today) are the only teams to record 15 wins in spring training play.
Ramirez (3-0) scattered four hits in 6.0 scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out four and did not walk a batter to lower his Cactus League ERA to 0.96 (2 ER, 18.2 IP). Left-hander Joe Beimel (1.0 IP, K), right-hander Fernando Rodney (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K) and right-hander Yoervis Medina (1.0 IP) secured the win with 3.0 hitless innings. Medina secured his second save with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
Left fielder Dustin Ackley went 3-for-4 with a double, and is now batting .457 (21x46) in Cactus League play. Robinson Cano added a pair of hits (2x3, BB) to extend his hitting streak to 8 games. Cano has recorded a hit in 10 of 11 games played, and is now batting .567 (17x30).
Seattle jumped out to a 2-0 lead with sacrifice flies from Kyle Seager (5th inning) and John Buck (6th inning). The first run came into score after Abraham Almonte singled, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Seager lifted a fly ball to left field to score Almonte. The Mariners loaded the bases in the 6th inning on a single by Corey Hart, double by Ackley and walk to Nick Franklin, before Buck flew out to deep center field to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Mariners added an insurance run in the 9th inning on a run-scoring groundout by Endy Chavez.
The Mariners (15-6-3) return to Cactus League action tomorrow with a home game vs. the San Diego Padres at Peoria Stadium (7:05 pm). LH James Paxton (0-0, 2.08) will make his fifth spring start against Padres RH Ian Kennedy (0-1, 6.59). The game will be broadcast live on 710 ESPN Seattle and televised by ROOT SPORTS.

Several Mariners participated in a minor league game this afternoon in Peoria…here are some highlights:
- Felix Hernandez allowed 3 runs (2 ER) in 7.0 innings (7.0,5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 82 pitches/60 strikes).
- Mike Zunino went 2-for-2 with a run scored, double and one walk while catching Felix’s start.
- LHP Charlie Furbush and LHP Lucas Luetge each tossed 1.0 scoreless inning.
