Urruti scores winner, Timbers beat FC Dallas 3-1 in MLS

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Maximiliano Urruti scored the winning goal for the Portland Timbers as they defeated FC Dallas 3-1. The win Saturday was the first of the season for Portland, while Dallas lost its first. On a night celebrating him, with fans given cutouts of his head on a stick, Nat Borchers opened well with his new team in the 23rd minute. Off a corner kick, the defender found himself unguarded six yards from goal and drove a header into the ground and past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.

Gonzaga University Receives $5 Million Gift

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A benefactor has given Gonzaga University a $5 million gift for its recent success on the basketball court. The university says it received the gift on Friday from an anonymous donor who was inspired by Gonzaga's student-athletes and the success of the men's and women's basketball teams. The gift was given to support basketball performance and training. The university says it is working on a plan to expand facilities, add practice and training areas and student-athlete support services. April 6, 2015

Miller, Happ Lead Mariners Over Rockies 5-4

Happ threw four scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out four and walking two. Coming in, he had allowed 12 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings overall.

Sounders Release F Kenny Cooper

Sounders logoKenny Cooper has been waived by the Seattle Sounders after the team was unable to find a trade market for the forward. Seattle made the roster move with Cooper on Thursday. General manager Garth Lagerway told reporters that Cooper's contract didn't fit in Seattle's framework and there was no trade market available.

Lefty Reliever Joe Beimel Back With Seattle

The Seattle Mariners brought back left-handed reliever Joe Beimel on a minor-league deal and optioned newly acquired left-hander Mike Montgomery to Triple-A Tacoma. Seattle made the roster moves Thursday during an off day. Beimel had been with the Rangers during spring training but struggled, giving up 11 earned runs in three innings over four appearances. He was released by the Rangers on March 23.
