Parity Reigns Supreme In Surprise-Filled Pac-12

college football2015PHOENIX (AP) - This is a new version of the Pac-12, where new teams are on the rise and the unexpected has become the norm.

The Pac-12 hierarchy in recent years started with Oregon. But Oregon already has two losses this season, the latest one of the biggest surprises of the college football season: Utah 62, Oregon 20, in Eugene.

The Utes have been one of the biggest surprises in college football, not just the Pac-12.

UCLA rocketed up to No. 7 in the poll two weeks ago after throttling Arizona on the road, only to fall back 13 places after losing to Arizona State at home.

The Sun Devils won that game on the heels of a blowout loss to USC the week before. Colorado, at 3-2, has already surpassed its win total from last season and the conference still doesn't have a team that's under .500.

Caldwell Says He's Done Talking About Controversial Play

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Jim Caldwell doesn't want to talk any more about the controversial way his Detroit Lions lost Monday night - and he doesn't want his players talking about it either.

Caldwell says he doesn't want the Lions to be distracted by more discussion of Calvin Johnson's fumble on Detroit's final possession in a loss to Seattle.

The ball was knocked out of the back of the end zone by the Seahawks' K.J. Wright. Rather than flag him for illegally batting the ball, officials ruled the play a touchback.

Caldwell said he spoke with NFL VP of Officiating Dean Blandino on Tuesday, but the Detroit coach would not go into detail about that conversation.

Caldwell says defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker is out for the season with a dislocated ankle and broken leg.

2-2 Seahawks Are No. 8 In The AP Pro32 Rankings

NEW YORK (AP) -- The 2-2 Seattle Seahawks remain at No. 8 in the AP Pro32 power rankings this week. The Seahawks defeated the 0-4 Detroit Lions 13-10 Monday night.

The St. Louis Rams will get a better idea of how strong they really are in the AP Pro32 power rankings this weekend, when they visit the unbeaten Green Bay Packers.

The Rams made the biggest jump in the latest power rankings, improving nine spots to No. 10 in voting by the 12 media members who regularly cover the NFL. St. Louis is 2-2 after handing Arizona its first loss of the season. They defeated the Seahawks 34-31 in the season opener.

Chancellor's Big Play Allows Seattle To Beat Detroit 13-10

KamChancellor100515SEATTLE (AP) - Kam Chancellor punched the ball free from Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson at the 1-yard line when it appeared the Lions were going to take the lead, and the Seattle Seahawks held on for a 13-10 win on Monday night.

With Detroit on the verge of capping a 91-yard drive with the go-ahead touchdown with less than 2 minutes remaining, Chancellor came from the side and punched the ball from Johnson's arm as he was being tackled by Earl Thomas. The ball bounded into the end zone and went over the back line for a touchback and Seattle's ball at the 20.

Russell Wilson was sacked six times and pulled numerous escape acts, but threw a TD pass to Doug Baldwin in the first half and Steven Hauschka hit a pair of field goals from 50-plus yards as Seattle evened its record at 2-2.

Dipoto's First Big Move As M's GM Is Deciding On McClendon

SEATTLE (AP) - Now the wait begins to see what the first big move of Jerry Dipoto's tenure as general manager of the Seattle Mariners will be.

The 2015 Mariners were one of the biggest disappointments in baseball. Coming off an 87-win season and with expectations at a level not seen in more than a decade, the Mariners flopped because of an inconsistent bullpen, a sometimes shaky rotation and an offense that was non-existent for most of the first half of the season.

Instead of playing in the postseason for the first time since 2001, the Mariners now own the longest playoff drought in baseball at 14 seasons and counting. Seattle finished 76-86 after dropping nine of its final 11 games.
