Timbers Acquire Argentine Forward Lucas Melano

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Portland Timbers have signed Argentine forward Lucas Melano as a designated player.

The signing, announced Friday, which will be complete pending final documentation. Terms were not released.

Melano, 22, comes to the Timbers from Argentina's first-division Club Atletico Lanus, where he had five goals in 14 games this season.

He has appeared in 42 matches for the club since 2013, with eight goals. He helped Lanus win the 2013 Copa Sudamerica title, scoring three goals in nine matches during the tournament.

Portland general manager Gavin Wilkinson said the team had been interested in Melano for several years. The Timbers are using Major League Soccer's new targeted allocation money to pay down the salary budget value of Fanendo Adi, freeing a designated player spot.

Atlanta Beats Los Angeles 76-72

basketball genericLOS ANGELES (AP) - Angel McCoughtry scored 22 points, Aneika Henry made the go-ahead basket with 29 seconds remaining and Atlanta went on to beat the Los Angeles Sparks 76-72 on Thursday for the Dream's second road win. Henry's putback of a McCoughtry miss gave Atlanta a 74-72 lead - the Dream's first lead since it was 48-47.

Clippers Sign Free-Agent Forward Josh Smith

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Clippers signed free-agent forward Josh Smith, who helped eliminate them in the playoffs when he was with the Houston Rockets.

He averaged 12.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 blocks while playing 55 regular-season games with Houston, which picked him up when he was waived by Detroit after 28 games last season.

Smith reportedly signed a one-year deal for the veteran minimum worth $1.5 million.

He helped the Rockets rally from a 3-1 series deficit against the Clippers in the Western Conference semifinals. Smith scored 19 points in Game 6, when the Clippers led by 19 points at home only to lose. He had 15 points in Game 7.

The 29-year-old forward is the 25th player in NBA history with over 10,000 points, 5,000 rebounds, 2,000 assists and 1,000 blocked shots.

The signing was announced Thursday.

Shortstop Everth Cabrera Signs Minor League Deal With Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Shortstop Everth Cabrera has signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants.

General manager Bobby Evans confirmed the deal Thursday. Cabrera is scheduled to join San Francisco's Arizona rookie league team initially then move on to Triple-A Sacramento when ready, Evans says.

The 28-year-old Cabrera appeared in 29 games for Baltimore this season, batting .208 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs before his release last month.

He spent the previous six seasons in the NL West with San Diego regularly facing the reigning World Series champion Giants, who also won titles in 2010 and '12.

Cabrera was suspended by Major League Baseball for the final 50 games of the 2013 season for violating the sport's drug agreement in relation to its Biogenesis of America investigation.

Storm Keeps Sparks Winless On Road 68-61

seatte stormSEATTLE (AP) - Jewell Loyd scored 13 points and Seattle ended a five-game losing streak with a 68-61 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday.

Crystal Langhorne added 12 points and Ramu Tokashiki had 10 for Seattle (4-12).
