marinersbaseball2015SEATTLE (AP) - Joe Blanton pitched six-plus innings of two-hit ball, Alcides Escobar had three hits and the Kansas City Royals beat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Monday night. Blanton (2-0) struck out seven and worked into the seventh inning before being lifted after allowing a leadoff double. Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland all pitched one inning of relief. Holland earned his 14th save in 15 opportunities.

Washington QB Cyler Miles Retires From Football

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington quarterback Cyler Miles has decided to retire from college football due to a chronic hip injury. Washington announced the decision on Monday. The school said the hip injury has persisted through Miles' career and doctors have advised him not to keep playing. Miles was suspended for spring practice last year after his role in two on-campus assaults in February 2014. He was also suspended for the season opener but ended up starting 12 games, throwing for 2,397 yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions.

US Open Sunday Viewership Down From Last West Coast Event

NEW YORK (AP) - With Tiger Woods missing the cut, the U.S. Open's TV viewership for the final round was down 30 percent from the last time the tournament was on the West Coast. Sunday's coverage on Fox averaged 6.7 million viewers. That was down from 9.6 million when the U.S. Open was last played on the West Coast in 2012, which allows for the final holes to be played in prime time in much of the country.
