Hernandez Gem Leads Seattle Past Angels 3-1

felix52814Felix Hernandez took a shutout bid into the ninth inning, coming within one out of his first complete game since August 2012 as the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-1 on Wednesday night. Mike Zunino homered and drove in all of Seattle's runs. Hernandez (7-1) became the seventh pitcher in Mariners history with seven victories before June 1.

Seattle Signs Xavier Nady To Minor League Deal

Outfielder Xavier Nady has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners after being released by San Diego earlier this month. Nady passed his physical and finalized the deal with Seattle on Wednesday. He'll report to extended spring training at the Mariners complex in Peoria, Arizona. Nady played in 22 games for the Padres, but hit just .135 with three homers and four RBIs. He had only five hits total in 50 at-bats with the Padres before being designated for assignment on May 5. He became a free agent on May 11. Nady is a career .268 hitter, but has not played more than 100 games in a season since 2010 with the Chicago Cubs. May 29, 2014

Former Washington Star Bob Houbregs Dies At 82

Former Washington basketball star and Hall of Fame inductee Bob Houbregs has died at age 82. Houbregs died on Wednesday morning, the school confirmed. Details of his death were not immediately available. Houbregs was a star in college thanks to his hook shot. He led Washington to its only Final Four appearance in 1953, capping his stellar career at Washington. He was an all-Pacific Coast Conference selection from 1951-53 and an All-American in 1953. Houbregs was Washington's all-time leading scorer from the end of his career until the 1980s. He still ranks fifth on the Huskies' all-time list. Adi Scores Twice, Timbers Beat Chivas USA 2-0

Fanendo Adi scored his first two MLS goals to help the Portland Timbers beat Chivas USA 2-0 on Wednesday night. Portland improved to 3-3-7, winning its second straight game and third in its last five. Chivas dropped to 2-6-4. Former Chivas midfielder Jorge Villafana helped create the first goal when he ran down the left flank in the 65th minute and crossed the ball to Adi for a shot from 10 yards out. Adi doubled Portland's advantage in the 71st minute on a breakaway. Chivas' Bobby Burling was sent off in the 84th minute after a rough challenge on Adi. Portland made eight changes to the starting lineup from its road victory Saturday night over New York.
