Timbers Beat East-Leading DC United 1-0

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Captain Will Johnson returned to Portland's lineup to help the Timbers beat Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United 1-0 on Wednesday night. Johnson missed the first 12 games of the season while recovering from a broken right leg suffered on Sept. 27. He played 84 minutes before being substituted out. Maximiliano Urruti scored the lone goal in the fifth minute. Gaston Fernandez jumped on a loose ball on the right wing and sent a hard, rolling cross into the box for Urruti to bang home for his second goal of the season.

Seattle Takes Over Top Spot In West By Beating Colorado 1-0

Sounders logoSEATTLE (AP) - Marco Pappa scored in the 16th minute to lift the Seattle Sounders to a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Wednesday night, moving them into first place in the Western Conference. Pappa's goal was his first of the season for the Sounders (7-3-2, 23 points). Goalkeeper Stefan Frei earned his league-leading seventh shutout and his third in a row. Seattle has not allowed a goal at home for 380 minutes, dating back to a 3-2 loss to San Jose on March 14.

WSU Athletes Score Well In Class

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The NCAA has released its latest Academic Progress Rate for student-athletes and Washington State teams recorded six perfect scores. The announcement Wednesday was for the 2013-14 academic year. Women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, women's golf, rowing and volleyball all recorded perfect academic scores of 1,000 for the year. Washington State's football team recorded a four-year average score of 951, an improvement from last year's score of 944, and meeting the NCAA's 930 standard. The single-year score of 973 beat last year's mark of 963. Men's basketball had a four-year average of 938, also meeting the standard. May 28, 2015

(AP) - Kyle Seager hit a grand slam in the eighth inning and a game-winning home run in the 10th on Tuesday night to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 7-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The game-winner, Seager's 10th home run of the season, came off Brad Boxberger (2-2) after the Rays had rallied for three runs to tie the game in the ninth.

Stars Missing For Various Reasons As Seahawks Open OTAs

RENTON, Wash. (AP) - Russell Wilson, Jimmy Graham and Cliff Avril were absent for personal reasons. Michael Bennett and Bruce Irvin were just absent. And Marshawn Lynch? Well, no one expected him around anyway. The Seattle Seahawks began on-field organized team activities Tuesday with a number of their biggest stars missing. Avril posted on Instagram about the death of his father, while Graham was attending the funeral of his manager in Miami.
